More than half of the Philippines' provinces are in drought as El Nino exacerbates hot and dry conditions typical for March, April and May

Filipino expats are about to face tougher rules on sending 'balikbayan boxes' back to their country. These boxes usually hold presents (read goodies) that many Filipino expats send to their kin staying in Philippines from across the globe, including the UAE.
It is not yet confirmed when these rules will become effective, but some sources said they could be implemented from August 1. Philippines-based news portals - like the Manila Bulletin - said that the new regulations will come into effect starting October 15 this year.
According to a Customs Memorandum Order retrieved from the Philippine Bureau of Customs website, the new policy will take effect "immediately".
The new rules stipulate the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to provide the Bureau with a list of items that the 'balikbayan box' contains.
Customs Commissioner of the Philippines Nicanor Faeldon said the measure comes after their Bureau seized a box that contained a high-powered firearm from the United States.
A Tempo report adds that Faeldon said the 'balikbayan boxes' will be opened and put under scanner to confirm the contents listed by the OFWs. It also added that the new measure won't cause delays in sending and release of the package.
