Spanish Scholar Bags Zayed Book Award Cultural Personality Prize
ABU DHABI - The Shaikh Zayed Book Award’s Cultural Personality of the Year 2009 prize has been awarded to Professor Pedro Martinez Montavez of Spain.
Secretary-General of the award Rashed Al Oraimi announcedon Sunday thatthe prize is a “tribute to his leading role in building bridges between Arab and Spanish cultures and his continuing efforts in opening a dialogue between both cultures”.
The Cultural Personality of the
Year winner receives Dh1 million,
a gold medal bearing the Shaikh
Zayed Book Award logo and a certificate of merit. The winners
are announced ahead of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, to end
in a prestigious tribute ceremony onMarch 18.
The Shaikh Zayed Book Award is an independent cultural award established under the patronage and support of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.
Professor Montavez is a renowned scholar, translator and author. His portfolio includes more than 20 books in the field of Arabic literature, the history of Andalusia, Arabic language and translation.
He has translated the works of many legendary Arabic poets, including Nizar Qabbani, Mahmoud Darwish, Adonis and Kahlil Gibran, and worked on many research papers discussing the status of modern Arabia.
He holds three honorary PhDs and has been awarded and honoured for his achievements and works by several prestigious entities.
