Slew of events to marks Philippines independence day

ABU DHABI - The Embassy of Philippines will organise a host of activities to mark the 107th anniversary of the independence of the country on June 12.

"A piano concert, cultural show, business-oriented seminar and sports events are the main activities of the celebrations, to the active participation of the Filipino community and the support of various institutional and individual sponsors," said Philippine ambassador Libran Cabactulan.

The piano concert by Dr. Raul M. Sunico, an international classical pianist, will be held at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on June 5. He will hold a brief lecture on Philippine music on June 6 at the Delma Cafe, and a piano concert at the Crowne Plaza Auditorium on June 7.

The Filipino community in the capital will also present a cultural show at the Abu Dhabi National Theatre on June 9, that will depict the cultural evolution of Philippine songs, dances, costumes over several historic ages.

An entrepreneurship seminar will be held on June 2 for Filipinos who wish to acquaint themselves with business, entepreneurial and investment prospects.

The Independence Day Unity Games will be a package of a variety of sporting events, from May 12, with the opening of the lawn tennis tournament. The grand opening of the event will be held on May 13 at Al Jazierah Sports and Cultural Club. Additional events such as swimming, table tennis, darts, wrestling, chess, billiards and badminton will be conducted on June 10 at the same venue. A bowling tournament will be held from June 3 to 10, at Shaikh Khalifa Bowling Centre.

The celebrations will culminate with a flag-raising ceremony to be held at the Philippine Embassy on June 12.

"The celebrations provide an opportunity to remember the sacrifices and the ideals of our forefathers in their quest for freedom and liberty. The present generation draws inspiration from them to strengthen their resolve to participate in endeavours aimed at promoting unity and justice," Mr. Cabactulan said.
