While residents complain of traffic congestion, Sharjah has decided to build more roads and bridges, and speed up maintenance and development works.
Eng Yusuf Al Suwaihi, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Sharjah, said the road projects are in line with the directions of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to meet the current and expected needs of the urban expansion of the emirate.
RTA Sharjah has meanwhile maintained 2,753 road signboards to ensure a better, safer and more convenient service across the emirate, according to Hamad Al Nuaimi, head of road signboards section, RTA Sharjah. "The project, worth Dh2.5 million, is carried out on a regular basis to meet urban expansion and attract more investments."
Suwaihi said they also meet with the Sharjah traffic police on a regular basis to discuss the ongoing and planned road projects to ensure traffic flow and avoid traffic congestion. "RTA Sharjah has built protective fences on most of the arterial roads of the emirate to prevent random crossing and protect people's lives."
The authority has also completed the maintenance works of a number of bridges in Sharjah, and widened road entries and exits, he stated. "Extending the road ban on the trucks running here by two hours till 11pm has proven efficient in curbing congestions," he added.
