Many motorists have begun to use service roads behind the Mall of the Emirates and other roads leading to traffic chaos in the past two days, residents told Khaleej Times.
The residents of Jumeirah and Al Barsha areas had similar tales to narrate.
John Mathews, a resident of Greens, said, “I used to take 15 minutes to reach my office located near the first interchange on Shaikh Zayed Road. But with Salik in place it took me an hour to reach my office as many motorists prefer to use the service road in a bid to avoid toll fee.”
Rohan Mehta, a resident of Springs, said, ‘All the roads leading to Springs are clogged after the introduction of Salik. We have access to three main highways. But to reach any of these highways we have to use the service roads and all of them are congested.”
“Now I have to start early to reach office on time. It really bothers me,” he added.
Meanwhile a statement from Emaar, the developer of these properties said, “Emaar Properties works closely with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to provide an efficient transport infrastructure for its residents. The introduction of Salik, an RTA initiative, is clearly directed at reducing traffic congestion on the main highway.”
“We believe that the increased vehicle inflow through the roads leading to Emaar’s projects is a temporary phenomenon, and we are working with the authorities to ensure smooth traffic flow,” statement added.
“The master-planned communities enjoy excellent traffic infrastructure support as all of Emaar’s properties have easy access to three main highways — Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and Emirates Road,” the statement said.
