Dubai will be the first emirate to offer such services to the residents of other emirates, which according to a senior RTA official will be a precursor towards a common and standard registration process for the entire country.
Revealing the details of the ground-breaking initiative exclusively to Khaleej Times, the CEO of the RTA’s Licensing Agency, Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, said that the move comes keeping in mind the convenience of thousands of motorists who live in one emirate and work in another.
“In comings weeks, probably soon after Eid, we will be allowing vehicles registered in other emirates to come and renew their registrations from three of our selected centres. This is being done in coordination of the Ministry of Interior and other emirates will reciprocate our initiative and will start accepting Dubai-registered vehicles soon,” said Bahrozyan.
He added that his agency is coordinating with the Ministry of Interior to come up with a joint statement on the initiative. “Once all the issues concerned are resolved we will announce jointly with the Ministry of Interior the dates of launch in Dubai as well as other emirates.”
The initiative, he said, is part of the ongoing linking process which will make the databases and information systems of all the emirates accessible to the other, rendering the standardisation of more services possible.
“The linking process is in the advanced stage and hopefully it will be complete soon. Once that is done then we should be able to render a variety of services to customers from across the country, including renewal of driving licences,” added Bahrozyan.
He further said that only minor technical issues are keeping the RTA from providing the driving licence renewal service for residents of other emirates. That service would also be launched in just a few weeks.
When asked whether those with visa from one emirate and working in another would be issued driving licences from the place of their employment, Bahrozyan said that there is a Ministry of Interior policy regarding the issue, which is that the employee has to produce proof of his employment in the particular emirate from where the person wants a driving licence.
“The person has to produce convincing proof that, for example, he/she works for an Abu Dhabi-registered company and currently serves in its Dubai branch, than we can open a driving file here, it is as simple as that.” — shafaat@khaleejtimes.com
