As many as 459 motorcycles and quad bikes have been impounded from various streets in Ras Al Khaimah for violating traffic laws so far this year, said Col. Ahmed Al Bughaim, Head of the Patrol Section at the Traffic and Licensing Department.
Most of the seized motorcycles and quad bikes did not meet the basic safety requirements. Some young motorcyclists were caught riding without licences and some were found riding quad bikes on main roads.
The majority of the violators were below 18 years.
Al Bughaim said reckless motorcyclists and quad bikers have caused a number of accidents which resulted in deaths and injuries.
The department has received a number of complaints against youngsters who break speed limits and flout other rules, including riding noisy and modified models of motorcycles, especially on internal streets of the emirate.
The officer said the traffic police had initiated safety awareness campaigns during this year, which would continue throughout 2010 to discourage youngsters from riding motorcycles or quad bikes on the main roads and to crack down on those riding without licences to reduce road accidents.
The campaigns were also aimed at encouraging youngsters to drive quad bikes only in desert areas, away from homes, and at clubs and circuits.
The officers also remind motorcyclists about the importance of wearing helmets and to strictly follow the traffic rules and regulations while on the roads. — ismail@khaleejtimes.com
