The decision was taken after an inspection campaign carried out by Sharjah Emergency Inspection Committee, comprising officers from Sharjah Municipality, Civil Defence and Sharjah Police, to ensure that the companies adhered to fire safety regulations in order to minimise the risk of fire accidents in the emirate.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Hareb Al Tunaiji, general supervisor of the committee, said all the 384 companies had been issued several warnings before the decision to disconnect power supply was taken.
He added that the violations and fire accidents had declined by 40 per cent during the last three months due to intensified inspections by the committee which maintains files of each company that had been inspected and given warnings and penalised.
“Disconnection of electricity was the last option. Only when the companies are found repeating the violations, despite several warnings, that the power supply is cut,” Al Tunaiji clarified.
The committee focuses on checking of availability of fire protection equipments such as extinguishers, water pump and hose reel, fire exits and fire alarm systems in the premises. It also ensures that the companies maintain enough space to allow firemen to move easily in times of emergency and make sure the goods are properly stored in the warehouse.
He pointed out that the committee is taking measures to deal with fire incidents that could occur during the coming summer season.
The precautionary measures include intensifying inspections in industrial, commercial and residential areas.
