Popularity soars for e-Go cards

DUBAI - If sales figures of the e-Go card are any indicator, it is evident that the new electronic facility has caught bus travellers' attention in a big way. The card was officially launched in the second week of this month after a week's trial.

In its trial period, the card sales at eight outlets were reported between 800 and 1,000 per day. "In the first fortnight, the response to the e-Go card has been overwhelming," Essa AI Dousari, Acting Director, Public Transport Department, Dubai Municipality, said. It is reported that over 5,000 cards comprising all options - the monthly pass, prepaid (also known as 'purse option') and student passes have been sold.

The e-Go card will attract a large number of people as it is financially beneficial. It also promotes the use of public transport buses, resulting in a considerable reduction in traffic congestions in various parts of the emirate.

Mr Al Dousari added that to support the sale of the card, an aggressive advertising campaign comprising above and below the line advertising had been launched. Regular passengers are delighted because the card saves a lot of time for them.

Drivers are equally happy as the modern technology assists them in their service to passengers. "To help passengers, we should very soon be making credit card facility available at bus stations," Mr AI Dousari assured, adding that the ultImate objective of the civic body would be to provide convenient services to the passengers.

The e-Go card, he said, provided a completely new mode of payment of bus fare and streamlined public transport. Faster than using cash, the e-Go card moves with a show-and-go speed, thereby saving time and ensuring hassle-free travel. It is a pre-paid electronic card enabIing cashless travel.

Among its various benefits, one is that it entitles a card-holder a special discount of 10 per cent on travel fare. In addition to this financial advantage, the consumer is allowed to use it for stipulated discounts at various retail outlets in Dubai, several of whom have tied-up as loyal partners with the e-Go card. The card is sold and recharged at the Dubai Municipality public transport stations only. It is also available at the customer service centre in Karama, Bur Dubai.
