“We are evaluating each beggar’s social and human situation and trying to help the needy,” he said.
He said that investigation teams have been set up to determine whether the arrested beggars are conmen or they need help. If the police find they need assistance on humanitarian grounds, they are helped through charity organisations and government institutions to find a job so that they can earn an honest living.
He noted that the Dubai Police arrested 182 beggars, including 31 women, during the campaign that runs until the end of the Eid Al Fitr holidays.
Colonel Mohammed Rashid Al Muhairi, Director of Tourist Police Department and director of the campaign, said that 60 police patrols are taking part in the campaign, which covers all residential areas of Dubai, as well as mosques, shopping malls, markets, petrol stations and parking lots.
Residents are urged to report beggars on CID hotline 800243.
