Dubai - Parents must be aware of UAE laws

Arrival of a baby is always good news for all. The parents need to make a lot of preparations before its birth. If they are residing in the UAE, the parents should be aware of the laws in this country. A pregnant woman could go to a government or private hospital for her delivery. The newborn's citizenship will be the same as the baby's father, according to the information available on the Government of Dubai website www.dubai.ae.
It is also very important for the woman to get married if she is pregnant in the UAE. When she goes for her first check-up, the hospital authorities will ask for an original marriage certificate and copies of visa and passport.
The unmarried expatriate expectant mothers should return to their home countries for delivery, as per the UAE law.
Besides, abortion in Dubai is illegal unless there are medical complications and the abortion is sanctioned by the hospital.
The Sharia Court in Dubai can perform marriages as per Islamic law, provided the groom is a Muslim. Expatriate resident couples - who are not Muslims - can choose to get married in a church (Christians), temple (Hindus) or a consulate/embassy.
However, all such marriages should be registered and attested either by the country of the person's origin or the respective consulate/embassy.
