While conducting exercises in the Arabian Gulf, the crew of the Bulkeley received a distress call from Jebel Ali 3 requesting assistance. The US Navy ship immediately launched their helicopter and manoeuvred to the vicinity of the passenger ferry.

The patient was lifted onto the helicopter from the front of the passenger ferry and taken to a hospital in Bahrain for medical treatment. A naval medic administered initial medical assistance during the transit to Bahrain.

Upon arrival in Bahrain, the patient was met by representatives from the US and Iraqi embassies and transferred to an awaiting ambulance.

The USS Bulkeley, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia, is deployed to the Fifth Fleet Area of Responsibility as part of the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terror.
