According to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), it did not announce any school holidays despite heavy rains in the emirate last year. However, there was no dearth of hopes for a holiday from kids!
In the latest Education Landscape Report, the KHDA said a total of 16,604 social media messages came from students asking for a day off during the rains.
The Dubai airport received an annual average rainfall of 77.4mm last year. The UAE saw a record amount of rain this January, with many Dubai schools shutting down to clear water-logged campuses and ensure safety of children.
The KHDA allows Dubai schools to decide independently whether to remain open or closed under such circumstances. However, they are required to make up for the lost days and get approval from the authority on how they plan to do so.
During the rains, one student tagged KHDA on Twitter and said: "Forecast looking ruff so cancel school pls." To which KHDA replied: "Your spelling's even ruffer. Best you go to school."
Another student said: "I had school on Sunday. Please give us another day where all schools closed." And KHDA replied: "That means you're a whole day smarter than everyone who stayed home gaming."
And one more student said: "The forecast says it'll be raining heavily tonight, and I've got an exam to write tomorrow, holiday or no?". KHDA replied saying the student should ask the school's principal."
But students seem to enjoy KHDA's witty tweets, with one student saying: "I ain't going to school tomorrow no matter what. Until or unless I get a few replies on this or maybe just one if it's by @KHDA."
