Hotels in the area had warned tourists on Monday not to venture into the sea due to the presence of oil slicks. A two-kilometre oil spill was seen on the coastline resort on Sunday and Monday. This was the second time in 20 days that an oil spill has appeared on the Dibba Al Fujairah coastline.
Eng. Hassan Al Yamahi, Director of Dibba Al Fujairah Municipality, said that once the civic body was alerted, the environment control section acted swiftly and tackled the oil slick successfully.
“No doubt, frequent oil spills affect tourism and harm marine life,” he said.
He urged the Ministry of Environment and Water and Coast Guards to take measures to prevent repetition of oil slicks.
He also accused beach-goers, industrial firms and transiting tankers and ships of dumping waste into the sea.
