DUBAI — It’s something different
that Noor Ali Rashid wanted to create when he decided to avoid the sofa and instead, sat on the marble floor of the Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai, to pose for photography enthusiasts on Wednesday.

The 80-year-old ‘royal photographer’ after whom has been named an award to acknowledge the art of picture taking, looks for snapshots that speak a thousand words — a character that runs through all the winning entries of the Noor Ali Rashid Photography Award presented to 24 students.

“Everything is easy now with automatic cameras. Therefore to stand out one needs to create something new for this generation. Good composition depicting an action makes a quality picture,” said Rashid.

The award was initiated four years ago to honour the 50 years of accomplishments of the photographer who has been a collector of photographs on the beginnings of UAE. The competition saw 61 participants from the ministry accredited colleges battling it out in categories of UAE Land, UAE People, UAE Portfolio and UAE Leaders.

Inspired by his subjects are students who tried to capture the essence of their land on their lens and are now recipients of the coveted award.

Raisa Al Zarouni, first prize winner of the photography competition in the UAE People category used the technique of placing her camera on the floor for a reflective image.

“A silhouette of the woman going through the portals of our university signifies the femininity of a woman without revealing much.”

A shadow on the desert sands was Asma Ahmed Darwish’s way of translating her identity on to photo paper. “It shows my identity stamped on my land,” said the first prize winner in the UAE Land category. But the International Studies major at the Zayed Union (ZU) has a penchant for traditional subjects much “like Noor Ali,” she said.

This year the award included a video category as well. “Every year we try to enhance the boundaries of competition. Next year we are looking to open the competition to the public and also go beyond UAE,” said Dr Sulaiman M.Al Jassim, Vice-President of ZU, initiators of the competition.

The aim of the competition has been to encourage participation of youth to express their minds. “Our cultural initiatives need to activate people into participation. Culture is not something you can control at one place. Look at Noor Ali...he came from Pakistan and now he is one of us. He is giving the new generation a motivation to document the country as his pictures have done in the last 50 years,” said Abdul Rehman Al Owais, Minister of Culture Youth and Community Development at the award ceremony.
