His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated several new projects in Khor Fakkan on Saturday. The projects, which included a Dh5.5 billion highway, a group of lakes and a memorial, mark a new phase in the development of the infrastructure and tourist facilities in the East Coast city.
His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, joined the Sharjah Ruler as he inaugurated the 89-kilometre Sharjah-Khor Fakkan Road Project. Passing through the Hajar Mountains, the road is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to 45 minutes.
A video posted by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau showed Sheikh Sultan and his motorcade driving through the various tunnels on the road. Workers can be seen cheering as the Sharjah Ruler's motorcade passed by.
He is seen sharing a light moment with Sheikh Saud as he inaugurated the Khor Fakkan lakes at the city's entrance. As its name suggests, the Four Lakes project is a group of four artificial lakes. The two Rulers witnessed a rowing race and the release of wild deer around the lake.
The Sharjah Ruler also inaugurated Al Rufaissa Dam. The lake behind this dam spans an area of 82,280 square metres and a depth of 13 to 20 metres, as well as an anchorage for 50 boats.
He went on to launch Al Adwani and Al Rabi towers. A folklore area will be opened after it is restored.
He also inaugurated the Resistance Memorial, which commemorates the people of Khor Fakkan who fought against a Portuguese seaborne attack at the beginning of the 16th century.
The historic fort of Khor Fakkan, which will serve as a museum for antiquities from Sharjah's Eastern Region, was also opened.
