Humaid bin Deemas, Acting Director General of the Ministry, told the media on Tuesday that files of 249 erring firms were also handed to the public prosecution for allowing the 616 workers to work with other firms.
“The violations were discovered through 231,205 inspection visits across the country made in 2008,” he said.
“Some 54,951 inspections — almost 23 per cent of the total — were undertaken to evaluate the compliance of firms regarding the mid-day break during the hot summer months of July and August,” he added.
He said that ILO experts had commended on the inspection campaigns conducted by the UAE during summer in their follow up report on the enforcement of the convention of the organisation.
They have called on the UAE to continue implementing the four year old initiative this year too and introduce tougher penalties on offenders.
“The ministry stopped issuing new work permits to 7,083 firms for breaching labour regulations,’’ Humaid bin Deemas explained. The number of inspectors rose from just 80 two years ago to over 400 now.
In 2008, the ministry conducted 38,132 inspections in coordination with the Ministry of Interiors and Dubai Police compared to 15,970 in 2007.
There were 18,418 inspections in Abu Dhabi, 11,650 in Ras Al Khaimah, 4537 in Dubai, 1509 in Ajman, 1162 in Fujairah, 815 in Umm Al Quwain, 38 in Sharjah and 3 in Al Ain.
