To have a number plate is normal, but to have a lucky one is a different story. To present a gift to your wife is romantic, but to give her a brand-new car and a Dh20,000 prize you've won is kind of a fairy tale.
44-year-old Pankaj Tilak Raj, an Indian commercial manager with a company in Al Hamriya Free Zone, Sharjah, bought a brand new 2020 Hyundai Tucson to gift to his wife.
But, he came to know about the Lucky Number Plate drive initiated by the General Resources Authority (GRA), whereby the owner of a newly registered car can win Dh20,000 in a raffle draw.
Raj, who is based in Ras Al Khaimah, told Khaleej Times that he loved and respected his wife so much, and want to give her a special gift in her birthday.
"I decided to buy her a brand-new car from a showroom in Sharjah, but had the car registered in Ras Al Khaimah."
Raj, a father of two, went to the newly inaugurated car testing station at Khuzam area on the Hatta-Oman road for car registration.
"It took me only 20 minutes to have all the paperwork done," he said. "The staff there are very friendly and the station is so big and well-equipped."
Raj said he is happy to be the first winner of the prize and encouraged motorists to have their vehicle registered here.
"They can be lucky winners like me," he said. Adding that he is planning to give the Dh20,000 prize to his wife as well. "She deserves it. It is the least thing I can do for her, and the car is hers," he said with a wide smile.
Brigadier Jamal Al Tair, Director, GRA, said the move is meant to encourage Emiratis and residents alike to have their vehicles registered in Ras Al Khaimah.
"We have recently started operating a vehicle testing station up to the latest international standards."
The raffle draw is done electronically in a transparent way and without any human interference, he explained.
"This pioneering scheme will help boost communication with the public and encourage them to have their vehicles registered."
