A Sharjah-based organic farmer spent World Environment Day on Tuesday smashing a world record for a cause. Sudheesh Guruvayoor distributed 4,916 organic curry leaf saplings to students of Sharjah Indian School, earning him a Guinness World Record.
The previous record for 'most saplings distributed' was held by Dubai-based Gurunanak Darbar, where 2,083 saplings were distributed.
Sudheesh has dedicated the record to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, saying "Baba Zayed's love for agriculture" inspired him to work towards this cause for over three months. "Sheikh Zayed dreamt of a green UAE and I'm just proud and honoured that I've been able to contribute a little bit to that dream."
The curry leaves were grown in Sudheesh's organic garden in Sharjah, and branches were cut from the main tree and placed in small cups as saplings. The students have been encouraged to grow them, and the best curry leaf plant at the end of three months will be given a prize.
The Kerala native - who got into farming purely by passion - now holds five world records in the field.
Students need to take care of the curry leaves themselves. "It is to get students into the habit of cultivating their own vegetable garden."
