SHARJAH — In developed countries cardiovascular disease has been — and remains — the principal cause of morbidity and mortality in adults aged over 40.

It is anticipated that by 2020 Ischaemic Heart Disease will be the principal cause of death and disability worldwide according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

As a result, Sharjah Medical District in collaboration with the University of Sharjah's Centre of Continuing Education and Community Services and Monash University will organise a six-week postgraduate certificate course in cardiovascular diseases diagnosis and management for general practitioners at the university starting today. The course will be held every Thursday.

The course aims at improving the management of cardiovascular conditions in the community, improvement of cardiovascular health, and contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

The course is structured to deal with common cardiovascular problems like hypertension, chest pain and heart failure.

It includes training on risk factors assessment and reduction through lifestyle modification. All of these topics will have activities interspersed with the text.

Over 46 doctors from UAE will take part in the course.

The training will be led by cardiologists and consultant physicians from Al Qasimi Hospital, Kuwaiti Hospital, Al Dhaid Hospital, Al Zahra (private) Hospital, Al Jazera Hospital and Primary Health Care.
