Dubai — All private waste collection vehicles in Dubai will be tracked in real time from 2016 to reduce improper waste dumping practices and random disposal of municipal, construction and demolition wastes, the Dubai Municipality announced on Wednesday.
The civic body said it has issued a circular to all waste management companies involved in the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste as well as construction and demolition waste in the emirate of Dubai to implement the Automated Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System on their waste collection vehicles. The circular was issued on June 14.
The Vehicle Tracking System will provide real-time monitoring for all vehicles by sending direct signals to the control centre of the Dubai Municipality in order to show the exact location as well as the movement route of each vehicle all over the day.
“It is worth mentioning that this system will have a great impact on reducing improper dumping practices and the random disposal of municipal wastes, construction and demolition wastes. It’s also expected that the system will effectively contribute in reducing the amount of municipal solid waste going to the landfills while increasing the percentage of recyclable materials,” stated a Press release.
Improper disposal of wastewater attracts a fine of Dh100,000 whereas dumping hazardous materials and construction waste in places other than approved dumping yards will be fined Dh5,000 each.
Vehicles not supported with the tracking system will not be allowed to enter any of Dubai the Municipality’s waste treatment or disposal facilities from January 1, 2016 the civic body said.
It also requested all waste management companies involved in the collection and transportation of municipal solid wastes as well as construction and demolition wastes to be fully committed to the circular for the sake of public interest.
