The General Department of the Operations Room of Dubai Police swung into action after receiving an alert that some 26 people were drowning off Burj Al Arab. It was bad weather and they were all struggling to survive the menacing waves.
Captain Yahya Hussein, Head of Maritime Rescue Section at the Port Police Station, said they immediately pressed boats and water bikes into service and managed to save 25 of them.
However, the Egyptian went missing. It took the police two days to finally locate his body as bad weather had made the task difficult, Hussein pointed out. Following the incident, Captain Hussein has urged people to swim only in the designated areas and avoid swimming during the night.
He has also said that before going for swimming, beachgoers should first enquire about the weather, wind speed and sea conditions.
They should also be wearing life jackets before venturing into the sea in bad weather conditions.
While refusing to give the exact number of drowning cases reported on Friday, Hussein said moderate swimming skills posed great risks in bad weather conditions.
