According to ADFCA, when buying foodstuff, consumers buy 20 per cent more than they need.
The authority intends to educate consumers to buy only as much food as necessary, to promote the culture of sound purchasing, urging them to follow up information and guidelines for food transfer and food storage methods to ensure proper protection of the health.
Mohammed Jalal Al Reyaysa, spokesperson of ADFCA said, “Many consumers purchase food products in excess, which expire in few days such as milk, juice, curd, meat and cakes. We have found that many consumers buy almost 20 per cent more than what they immediately need. Ultimately, the rest tends to expire.”
The damaged foodstuff which expires soon poses big risk to human health, Al Reyaysa stressed.
He called on consumers to put perishable foods such as meat, fish and poultry products in the shopping cart at the end of their shopping before heading home so that they would be less prone to spoilage. He added that ADFCA will mobilise more field inspectors this year in the coming stages of food safety campaigns to extensively monitor the market and educate consumers to be a partner in achieving food safety in the emirate.
He urged consumers to inform the authority on its toll free number in case they come across any food-related violations. “If consumers cooperate with us we can serve the community better.”
“Following the publishing of the names of such violators and the closure of their establishments, we have received tremendous positive results and it led to a significant drop in violations. They don’t repeat the act for which they were fined previously,” Al Reyaysa said. Consumers can file complaints on the authority’s toll free number 8006565.
