'The RTA has completed the installation of five new pedestrian bridges in May and has installed notices prohibiting pedestrians from crossing the road dangerously near these pedestrian bridges,' said the Acting CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency in the RTA, Nabeel Mohammed Saleh.
The five operational AC pedestrian bridges are located on Abu Hail Road, Abu Baker Siddique Road, Airport Road, Casablanca Road and Beirut Road.
Saleh said eight more crossings would be coming up later in the year.
'The notices have been put up to remind people that crossing the road dangerously and not using the pedestrian bridges is an offence. There have been cases in which people tend to cross roads in a dangerous way by running across the fast moving traffic even on roads which have pedestrian bridges. By doing this, they risk their own lives and the lives of the motorists, too,' pointed out another RTA official.
Meanwhile, in a crackdown on jaywalkers, Dubai Police took action against 637 people who were caught crossing the roads at undesignated places.
The police stressed that pedestrians caught crossing roads at undesignated places would be fined Dh200 and a repeated offence would see them being referred to the Public Prosecution for suitable action.
In Abu Dhabi, the fine for jaywalking has been increased to Dh200 from the previous Dh50.
