A jury of international experts, including acclaimed Arab photographers, will review submissions in October with the winners due to be honoured in a special prize ceremony mid November in Abu Dhabi.

The overarching theme of the competition is ‘Cultural Reflections,’ to mirror the rich diversity of people’s lives and identities worldwide. For the first time, the competition will also feature a special prize recognising ‘Fine Arts in Photography.’

‘By focusing the contest’s theme on cultural reflections we hope it will excite photographers, professional and amateur, to capture the essence and diversity of the world we live in and look forward to sharing the entries with a wide audience to foster the concept of understanding cultures,’ said Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General, TCA Abu Dhabi.

The winning photographs will go on show to the general public in a two-month exhibition, which will run from mid November at the Manarat Al Saadiyat exhibition centre on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. The winning entries will also be featured in a limited edition book, which over the past two years has won +5 stars FIAB catalogue rating and a recognition from the Photographic Society of America and the United Photographers International Organisation.

The competition, which last year drew over 15,000 entries from 134 countries, aims to advance photographic art in the UAE, where Abu Dhabi is the largest of the country’s seven emirates and home to its capital city.

EPC 2012 pays tribute to the work of celebrated Iraqi photographer Murad Al Daghistani (1917-1982), who was a leader in contemporary Arab photography.

‘Daghistani was a contemporary of a period that played a major role in the development of classic documentary photography yet his work bears creative characteristics and a modernist view of the world,’ said Bader Al Nomani, EPC Manager, TCA Abu Dhabi. ‘From the mid 1930’s until his death, Daghistani captured the cultural values of those around him reflecting the beginning of contemporary Arab photography.’

Mai Murad Al Daghistani, daughter of the late photographer, said the tribute went beyond the personal and reflects Abu Dhabi’s contribution to developing a cultural movement, that strengthens inter cultural exchange.

‘The UAE capital is keenly honouring Arab symbols of art, thought and culture and promoting them on an international level, through the organisation of such international cultural events that are pushing the boundaries of learning and thought’ she said.

The competition’s general themes include environment, portrait, sports, close-ups (macro) and ‘Future Image Through Future Eyes’ for photographers aged under 21. Additional special prizes include: the Emirati Talent Award; Emirati Photographer Award of 2012; Emirati Photo Award; Arab Photo Award; Best Photographer Award and a Photography Clubs Award.

The new ‘Fine Arts in Photography’ accolade will see the award of three gold medals presented for the best works that represents innovative ideas that contribute to developing photography.

The competition will also see the presentation of the Noor Ali Rashed Award – a special accolade which pays tribute to Noor Ali Rashed (1929 – 2010) who was a leading figure in photographic art in the UAE and whose work has contributed to the documentation of life within Emirati society.

Open to photographers of all categories around the world, organisers anticipate receiving outstanding works of various schools and techniques, including business installations, panorama, digital images, modern techniques and artistic manipulations that respect performance values and standards of photographic art and FIAP rules.

‘The decision to open the competition to an international public stems from the belief in the universality of art, the intersection of human interests, and creativity in every time and place, and the ability of photography to facilitate interaction and communication amongst people’ Al Nomani added.

The competition programme, which regularly features specialised workshops, photography sessions, seminars, and solo and group exhibitions inside and outside the UAE has contributed to the international recognition of EPC. Entries can be made online via: www.ephotoc.net.
