The news of the alleged suicide of an Indian government official in New Delhi has shocked the officers in the Indian Consulate in Dubai as the deceased was due to join the mission here this month.
Indian media reported that 42-year-old Prabhash Das, a group-B Indian Foreign Service officer, was found hanging at his home in Dwarka in west Delhi on Sunday. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide though no suicide note was recovered from the spot. Reports said Das had marital troubles and had an argument with his wife minutes before he allegedly hanged himself.
The officer, who served as the assistant regional passport officer at the regional passport office of the Ministry of External Affairs, had recently been informed about his new posting in the Indian Consulate in Dubai, which itself has been battling the high number of suicides among expatriate Indians here. The twist of fate took place while Das was in the transition period.
Consulate officials here expressed shock and disbelief at the news.
A spokesperson confirmed to Khaleej Times that Das was supposed to join as a Vice-Consul here. “He should have turned up this month ... But, I believe he was waiting for something ... We don’t know what happened and we never expected such a bad news,” he said.
Another official said all at the consulate were shocked at hearing the news. “It’s very unfortunate. It is very sad that this has happened to a senior member of the ministry who was so young. Our hearts go out to his family at this difficult time.”
Apparently, the Consul-General of India in Dubai, Anurag Bhushan, had worked as Das’s senior in New Delhi prior to taking up his current position. Bhushan, who previously worked as the Regional Passport Officer at New Delhi, joined the mission here just five months ago.
He was in New Delhi and could not be reached for comments on Tuesday.
