He said so far the new rule has been applied in the case of three Emiratis, whose driving licences were ordered revoked for one year from their release from jail.
The move is restricted to Emirati nationals as expatriates are deported after serving their jails terms in drug-related cases, Fellasi said.
The traffic prosecution has addressed the Road and Transport Authority to initiate procedures connected with the revoking the licences in this regard.
“Our aim is to protect the individual and the road user. The move takes into consideration that the convict might return to his old patters of addiction and will be a danger to others. This move would make sure the drug addict convict will not walk out of jail and take the wheel right away.”
Fellasi confirmed that the traffic prosecution does not only investigate into traffic cases but it also seeks to curb traffic accidents by securing a margin of safety on the roads.
“The one year of licence revocation would be sufficient to indicate whether the convict has changed or not,”, Fellasi added. “The Anti-Narcotics Department of the Dubai Police keeps track of the drug addicts and makes them undergo regular tests to make sure their system is free of drugs and narcotics.”
Fellasi said the traffic prosecution has based its move of driving licence revocation on Aarticle 59 of the Federal Law on combating drugs and narcotics, which stipulates that ‘conviction in drug use more than once would result in non-licensing for the convicts to drive cars or cancelling of their existing licences.
This effect should last for one year after jail release, he added.
