This anomaly was unearthed by the Ministry of Labour (MoL), in cooperation with the Security State Investigation Department, said a senior MoL official.
Humaid bin Deemas Al Swaidi, Acting Under-Secretary of the Ministry, told reporters at a Press conference in the capital yesterday, that some Al Ain labour office staff had illegally eased the issuance of work permits without the endorsement of the Reconciliation and Settlement Committee of the MoL.
The suspects are all under arrest now. The ministry has transferred the case to the Prosecution. Bin Deemas, however, refused to reveal the number of clerks involved in the case or their nationalities.
Commenting on the manipulation of work permits, the MoL official said, "We have to wait for the Prosecution's final report."
He told Khaleej Times that at least 3,000 work permits had been issued illegally.
Ministry officials are working to find out the weak points in the procedures of issuing of work permits, so as to avoid such instances in future.
