Shaikh Mohammed said the UAE society is a global model of cohesion as advised by Islam, which exhorts Muslims to show mutual compassion.
The “UAE Initiative for Connection with Orphans and Minors” provides three options for young Emiratis willing to chip in: Fraternal connections to provide guidance and advice; taking care of orphaned and minor students for a certain number of class hours; and setting up common interest groups to engage orphans and minors in activities like swimming and biking.
Elderly people can also contribute by connecting with orphans and minors at senior care homes or acting as grandfathers. The initiative also includes a virtual academy to encourage their self development.
Shaikh Mohammed had earlier launched the Family Village, a pioneering project for hosting orphans, and providing them with high class accommodation, education, food, along with due medical and psychological care.
He had also ordered two plots of lands to be granted for the scheme — one for building the village and the other for building an endowment to support the project and make it sustainable.
Dr Hamad Al Shaibani, Director-General, Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai, said the scheme is a new chapter of Shaikh Mohammed’s generosity. “The move will help fulfil the needs of these segments at multiple levels by giving interested individuals and families an opportunity to chip in with a number of alternatives.”
‘One of many’
The Dar Al Ber Society pays particular attention to orphans, and “takes care of them financially, morally, medically, educationally, and psychologically”, he added. “The society has been accustomed to honouring hundreds of orphans every year on the ‘Loyalty Day for the Mother of Giving’ which has been held several times at different places.”
Dar Al Ber will hold the 10th ‘Loyalty Day for the Mother of Giving’ on June 26 at the World Trade Centre, which is expected to be attended by over 250 orphans from Dubai, Ajman, Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi.
Mazrouie said the annual ceremony is in appreciation to Shaikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, Wife of Shaikh Mohammed, for her tireless support to the orphans whom she annually gifts Dh1 million. The society also provides registered orphans with medical insurance.
The Dar Al Ber Society supports orphans in 22 countries in cooperation with 32 charity entities, and extends assistance to productive families to be self-dependent and run their own businesses. “Dar Al Ber Society has also built and furnished a village for orphans, worth Dh8 million, in the Beqaa area of Lebanon, and named it after the mother of giving.” -ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
