Most of the thefts were reported during the evenings last week from the Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, Al Buhaira Corniche and the Al Majaz area.
The police said the thieves, using duplicate keys, target only luxury cars, specially BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, Land Cruiser and other four-wheel drive vehicles
Ihsan M., who recently left the ignition of his Land Cruiser car switched on after parking it in the Al Buhaira Corniche area, while going to one of the shops, was shocked to discover his vehicle missing from the parking lot. He said that there were no valuables or cash in the car. The Buhaira Police are investigating the matter.
Huda S., too, had parked her Mercedes on Thursday on Jamal Abdul Nasser Street. She went to a ladies’ salon, but on her return she found the car missing. She claimed to have locked the car doors before proceeding to the salon.
Another woman Karimah on Friday left her car engine running after parking in the Al Majaz area. She went to buy something from a nearby shop. Within a few minutes when she returned after making her purchases, she found her car missing.
The spate of car thefts has raised concern among residents in Sharjah. “We do not feel secure any more. We have this constant fear that anyone’s car could be stolen. The police need to gear up and increase patrols even on the busy streets and areas of Sharjah,” said Mohamed Jamal Al Deen, who lives in the Al Buhaira Corniche.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, a police official from Al Buhaira Police Station said, “We immediately formed a patrolling team to look for the vehicles in various parts of the emirate after receiving 10 complaints of car theft. The police team is making all-out efforts to recover the vehicles and bust the gang.”
He pointed out that in some cases, the owners of cars lodge a ‘false’ report of car theft in order to claim insurance money.
