Bangladeshi Consul-General S. Bodiruzzman urged his compatriots to continue to be responsible residents of the UAE and to help in nation-building as both the UAE and Bangladesh are bound by a "common faith and shared aspiration for social progress."
He made this remark during the diplomatic reception for the Independence and National Day of the Bangladesh on Tuesday night at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Deira, Dubai.
The event was attended by Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, other UAE officials and diplomats from various countries.
"I am very happy to celebrate this momentous occasion in the history of Bangladesh here in Dubai with the UAE officials and members of the diplomatic corps," Bodiruzzman told Khaleej Times.
"We (Bagladeshis) are living here happily and it is good to note that the UAE and Bangladesh are bound by the common faith and religion. I urge our nationals to continue to respect the laws of the UAE and abide by its rules and regulations. And also, as expats, to help Bangladesh as a rising country."
Bangladesh declared independence 46 years ago, when the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, declared Bangladesh a sovereign country on March 26, 1971.
The UAE was the first country in the region to recognise Bangladesh and establish diplomatic relations.
Bangladesh opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi on March 23, 1974, and the Bangladesh Consulate General in Dubai was opened in July 1980.
"Bangladesh attaches great importance to its relations with the UAE, which is based on shared faith, culture and traditions," said Bangladesh ambassador to the UAE Muhammad Imran.
"Bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the UAE have grown steadily over the years and are being strengthened and diversified," he added.
