Over 16,250 CCTV cameras have been installed inside and outside buildings in Ras Al Khaimah as part of the 'Himaya' or 'Protection' system.
The comprehensive surveillance system is in response to directives issued by His Highness Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, to enhance safety, security and stability in the emirate.
Brigadier Jamal Ahmed Al Tair, Chairman of the General Resources Authority, RAK, said on Saturday that 2,472 buildings have so far come under the purview of law No. 3/2015.
"These entities include shops, establishments, government departments, public institutions, mosques, hospitals, schools, hotels, rest houses, jewellery shops, villas and residential towers and buildings."
The 16,256 CCTV cameras installed included 9,739 internal ones, and 6,517 external ones, he added. "This is a record achievement that reflects the awareness of the importance of the Himaya system."
Brig Al Tair said the move is in line with a global scheme that depends on advanced technological systems to enhance security. "The new system helps detect and curb crimes, and track and catch criminals."
The General Resources Authority is geared up to accelerate the process to cover all buildings in the emirate as per schedule. "We are planning to increase the monthly cameras being installed from 1,700 to 5,600."
The General Resources Authority has so far accredited 72 service providers for the job. "We have also trained 191 engineers and technicians at the American University in RAK so that they can professionally sell and instal the CCTV cameras in all buildings across the emirate."
He said more courses are planned to train and license a new batch of service providers, engineers and technicians.
"The General Resources Authority, in collaboration with the Licensure Section of the RAK Police, is launching regular inspection campaigns to ensure compliance with the new system."
The RAK police have detected 60 violations on the side of service providers, Brig Al Tair disclosed. "Some service providers failed to meet the set conditions and technical specifications set by the authority."
More inspection campaigns will be launched to ensure that service providers observe the set standards, protect customers' rights, and ensure the efficiency of the system.
