A 10-year-old Emirati boy, identified only as MR, sustained gruesome injuries after he was run over by a car while crossing the road to get a ball he was playing with.
The mishap took place at the Azan area, 35km to the south of Ras Al Khaimah city, according to Captain Ibrahim Saif Al Mazrouie, manager of traffic and patrols branch at the Daqdaqa police station.
The central operations room of the RAK Police, having been alerted to the accident, dispatched a traffic patrol, an ambulance, paramedics and rescue teams to the site in a record time.
"As per the medical report, the little boy sustained grave injuries, the most serious of which were a brain hemorrhage, a fracture in his skull, and several fractures in his right hip and left leg."
The little boy was badly hurt and bled so excessively that he was airlifted to the Sheikh Khalifa specialty hospital in Ras Al Khaimah, and then to the Rashid hospital in Dubai, he added. "He went through several emergency operations in his head, leg, and face."
Though the Emirati boy sustained serious injuries, he thankfully regained consciousness mainly due to prompt intervention, Captain Mazrouie. "The boy's condition is stable and he is speaking normally now."
Traffic investigations showed the accident occurred when the boy was playing football with some other kids at one of the playgrounds in the Azan area, he explained. "The little boy had to run out of the playground and cross a public road to get the ball back, but he failed to notice a passing car that ran over him."
The enactment of the mishap showed that the driver involved in the accident was a 28-year-old Emirati young man and he was properly driving his car at a speed of 40 to 60km per hour.
The residents of Azan were so sorry for the tragic mishap, and urged the bodies concerned to take action to ensure road users' safety.
"This is the third run-over accident in one month," they said, referring to a Syrian boy who was killed in a similar accident at the Dhait area while riding his bike to a stationary shop late at night for his sisters."
