Colorado physicist Sterling Backus and his 11-year-old son Xander are using a 3D printer to build a Lamborghini Aventador. The duo recently posted a video of them taking the car out for a short test drive.
The Erie residents started working on their full-size working model when the boy asked his father if it was possible to build one, UPI reports.
Backus said that his background as a 'gear-head' has been more helpful than his scientific training when working on the project.
Although it will look like the real thing, the car won't be considered a proper Lamborghini, as it uses a Corvette V8 engine, a few Porsche components and various part sourced from a local junkyard.
The pair hopes that their project will inspire children to get interested in STEM education.
"Okay you may hate math, you may not like science, you may not like language arts, you may not even like art, but it all comes together with this one project," Xander Backus said.
