Mirfa port in the Western Region is now open after re-development. The project is expected to boost tourism, local fishing communities and traders.
Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of State and chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, inaugurated the infrastructure upgrade at the port.
The redevelopment included rock revetment to protect port berths and construction of a breakwater to guard the basin from the force of strong currents. Floating pontoons were also put in place, creating new berths to accommodate 140 fishing boats and leisure ferries. The floating berths will help fishermen to keep their boats in water, instead of pulling them on shore after each trip.
A specially designed floating berth will allow the fishermen to unload their catch while shaded areas inside the port will facilitate the auctioning of fish.
Other additions to the Mirfa port include a multi-purpose administration building, a restaurant, a shaded car park as well as a dedicated fish market with retail units.
The extensive redevelopment is part of Abu Dhabi Ports' (master developer of ports and industrial zones) commitment to diversify the emirate's economy by supporting local communities.
The infrastructure upgrade, new facilities and improved standards of service have positioned Mirfa port to become the first such facility dedicated to supporting the emirate's fishing industry.
Al Jaber said the Mirfa port is a significant landmark in the Western Region, which is currently witnessing extensive development activities by Abu Dhabi Ports as part of their comprehensive enhancement plans.
"The development of the Western Region's ports is a strategic priority and in line with our leadership's directives of enhancing the region's economic resources," said Al Jaber.
"Our goal is to implement the master development plan which includes Mirfa port, Mugharraq port, Delma port and Sir Bani Yas. We are confident that with the support of Abu Dhabi Ports' partners, these projects will play a key role in the region's development and support the emirate's economic diversification efforts," the minister said.
Developing ports in the Western Region will provide added support to local communities. These improvements will also play a key role in attracting domestic tourism, specifically to the beaches of the Western Region, further supporting the local economy by generating new sources of income.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) will supply fuel to vessels from an offshore platform. Adnoc is also setting up a service centre, similar to its Adnoc Oasis convenience stores spread across the UAE, at Marfa port. Abu Dhabi Ports has constructed an ancillary power station to ensure electricity is available at the port.
In order to encourage investments, two plots have been allocated to attract maintenance companies and spare part suppliers for vessels. A third plot has also been set aside for small businesses, including an ice-making plant that will cater to fishermen and the overall community's needs.
