The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court has sentenced an Asian mother to three years in jail to be followed by deportation for attempting to sell her baby girl for Dh10,000 in order to pay her debts.
According to court records, the woman was arrested along with another suspect who accompanied her as mediator. An undercover policewoman who posed as a buyer, met the accused who wanted to complete the procedures immediately, so they agreed to give the infant to the policewoman and get the money. The mother reached an agreed spot with the baby and when she handed her over to the policewoman, she was arrested.
During the court hearing, the mother denied the charges when she was confronted by the judge. She told the court that she did not want to sell the infant, but she planned to take the money for the buyer and then run away without giving her the baby.
