137 held in Ajman for smuggling fake goods

The Ajman Police have arrested 137 suspects from various nationalities for smuggling fake goods into the country this year.
Speaking at a forum on anti-counterfeit and trade cheating organised by the Ajman Police on Wednesday, Brig Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the Ajman Police said smuggling fake products has become a phenomenon which affects the security, economy and public health of a country. "Massive collaboration between the departments concerned and the public is required to curb the phenomenon," he stressed.

He added that the culprits who were arrested in connection with smuggling counterfeits are mostly from countries that manufacture counterfeit goods. The police arrested 38 suspects from China, 27 from India, 19 from Syria, 17 from Iraq, 13 from Philippine, 11 from Bangladesh, 7 from Pakistan, 2 each from France and the USA and 1 from the UAE.
He said the culprits managed to smuggle the counterfeited goods through various ports in the county. The police in coordination with the department concerned managed to seize 6,000 pieces in 24 cases.

Brig Al Nuaimi said smugglers used various methods to smuggle goods, but the police in coordination with the authorities are well aware of these tricks and managed to foil their crimes.
Gen Dr Abdull Al Qadoos Al Abdooly, Chairman of Emirate Intellectual Property Association said they have provided 49 training programmes to employees of departments to find out the various methods and tricks used by counterfeit smugglers.

Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Medical Practice and Licence Sector in UAE Ministry of Health, said illegal medicines are found all over the world and that it forms 10 per cent of medicine trade. Its sales hit $85 billion in one year and more than 1,200,0000 people die every year due to this malpractise. In the UAE, it has been noticed that illegal medicines are not used just for sexually transmitted diseases but for different types of cancers, too. He added that the UAE's Ministry of Health follows stringent rules when it comes to manufacturing of medicines.
