Experimenting with food is part and parcel of the Dubai culinary experience. In recent times, many restaurants around town have experimented with elements such as gold leaf on food. One needs only to look at the 24k 'Burg Khalifa' and the Dh37,000 burger from the Pink Bite as shining examples.

But apart from experimenting with gold, the colour black is also being tastefully played with, as famous Dubai food truck SALT did during a pop-up held in Dubai Design District over the weekend.

Taking place under night skies in D3, SALT opened up SALT Black - an experimental food offering where everything in the menu is literally black. That includes Black Burgers (read: not burnt), black fries and the best of them all black ice cream. The looks can take a while getting used to but if anything - SALT has been famous around gastronomic circles in Dubai as having the best burgers around. One needs only to visit their Kite Beach branch to see the numerous residents and expats lining up to grab their sliders.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, the team behind SALT and SALT BLACK said: "...our latest concept will transform our pop-ups and give it a high-end, sophisticated vibe in contrast to our original beach airstream truck; a special black menu will be available and unique to the concept."

Over the weekend, the pop-up appeared in d3 but SALT also adds that it will only be available in the most unexpected of places. SALT adds: "The BLACK truck will pop up in rooftops, terraces, parking lots, warehouses - designing unused spaces and underserved locations." The next location of the pop-up remains a mystery - and that is the beauty of it.

As if that wasn't enough, they also avoided disclosing for how long will the pop-up be in town. For updates on when and where it will be, residents are advised to keep an eye on @findsalt on Instagram.

Despite all the mystery, the team at SALT gave one clue as to how to get the ultra-luxe black menu items. "When you receive a salt shaker filled with black salt, then you know you're part of our 'Black List'." It should be noted that one can only get the salt shaker via personal invite.

In any case, here we are hoping it's here to stay! It's not every day you get black burgers or ice cream for that matter in Dubai.
