The Indian leather industry has undergone an extensive transformation from a simple exporter of raw materials to an exporter of finished, value-added leather products. The recent sweeping reforms and policy framework of the government of India has yielded far reaching results for the Indian leather industry, which is currently one among the top eight industries for export revenue generation in India, holding 10 per cent of the global raw material, and two per cent of the global trade. India has become biggest livestock producer in the world with the capacity of 1.8 billion sqft of leather production annually.
Considered as one of the significant manufacturing sectors in India, the leather industry is known for its consistency in high export earnings and it is among the top ten foreign exchange earners for the country. This has led to the Council for Leather Exports - India (CLE) to conduct an exclusive "India Leather Expo" to showcase, harness and proliferate the brand image of Indian leather products in the UAE.
The CLE is the single largest and apex trade promotion organisation of the strong and rapidly growing Indian leather and leather products industry, functioning under the aegis of India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is the notified export promotion organisation for entire leather and leather products industry.
The India Leather Expo showcased finished leather, leather fotwear, leather garments, leather goods and accessories, leather gloves and non-leather footwear. The expo was organised by the CLE in association with Indian Embassy in the UAE, Consulate General of India and India Trade & Exhibition Centre. The Indian Leather Expo was inaugurated by Vipul, Consul-General of India, Dubai, in the presence of Mukhtarul Amin, chairman, CLE; Sudesh K Aggarwal, chairman ITEC m.e; P.R. Aqeel Ahmed, vice-chairman, CLE; and Sripriyaa Kumaria, director-general, ITEC m.e. along with top business houses namely Mohamediqbal Yacoobali, CEO, Shoemart, Landmark Group.
