A drunk woman had to shell out £300 for 48km Uber trip that usually cost £80 because she fell asleep in the cab. Helen Dryden, 25, accidentally booked an Uber from London to Newcastle instead of Guildford.
The error happened as the woman had been drinking and mistakenly forgot to update the 'home' settings in her app which still showed Newcastle as her destination where she went to university. Dryden fell asleep in the car and did not realise that she was heading to a wrong destination until the driver woke her up when they neared Milton Keynes to check if her destination was correct.
Dryden realised she was on the wrong route after which the driver drove her back 75 miles. The whole trip cost the inebriated woman £275 in total. "I couldn't believe it. The whole day ended up costing me about £400. I feel so embarrassed. I was a bit too drunk and just fell asleep," Dryden was quoted as saying Metro.co.uk.
Dryden had been out drinking whole day in Shoreditch until 1:00 am and missed her last train. She further added, "I was devastated when I woke up. I feel really stupid and completely ridiculous. I got too drunk. I'm supposed to be getting more responsible as I get older but it's not happening so far." Dryden decided to book herself an Uber instead of spending for a hotel room.
"I thought I said I wanted to go to Guildford when I got in. But I can't remember what his reply was. He woke me up and said 'are you sure you want to go to Newcastle?' 'I said 'what, no! Why would I want to go to Newcastle?' 'I ended up getting home at about 4:00am," she added.
Dryden later took responsibility for the error and said, "It's the first time I've ever done something like this. It's too much money to comprehend." An Uber spokeswoman said, "We are currently looking into this issue."
