An Australian woman did not anticipate the danger of treating herself to a fish pedicure during her trip to Thailand and had to amputate all the toes on her right foot.
Victoria Curthoys, 29, from Perth, Australia, contracted an infection after she visited fish spa on a holiday in Thailand in 2010. Soon, she suffered from constant fevers and other illnesses and after undergoing several tests, she was diagnosed with osteomyelitis - a rare and serious condition involving infection of the bone.
In 2006, Curthoys had a bone infection in her toes from walking on broken glass. The tank water at spa was contaminated with a water-borne disease that infected her previous surgery wounds.
In 2012, doctors amputated her right foot's big toe to stop the infection from spreading but had to remove all the remaining toes later. Her last toe was removed in November 2017 and since then Curthoys has been posting photos of her amputated foot to warn others against the fish spa, according to a Times Now news report.
A fish foot spa or fish pedicure requires dipping feet in a tub filled with small fish called Garra rufa also known as 'doctor fish'. These small fish then nibble the dead skin particles from the feet and also remove calluses from the bottom of the feet. However, due to health concerns and animal cruelty involved in these services, fish pedicures have been banned in many parts of the US, Canada, and Europe.
