A war of succession is continuing within Sharif family, said Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader and eminent lawyer Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan on Tuesday while asserting that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is not unwell.
"The PM's proposed trip to London is not related to any medical problem but to settle things arising from Panama Papers," Aitzaz said adding that Nawaz Sharif is quiet well. He said Sharif's daughter Maryam Safdar has till recently acted as a front-runner for the office of prime minister to succeed her father. Earlier, Hamza Shahbaz, son of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, was projecting himself as future prime minister. He noted that both Shahbaz and son Hamza have felt frustrated over emergence of Maryam Nawaz as main contender.
As such they have failed to defend Nawaz and his children on the Panama Leaks issue. However, Maryam Nawaz' name has also been tainted due to the disclosures. Aitzaz believed that Sharif seems anxious to placate PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and may try to meet him in London asking him to help him out of the current situation. "It will, however, be a major blunder if the PPP helped him in the present crisis," he added.
Referring to Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan's statement that Nawaz Sharif has never concealed the ownership of Mayfair flats in London, he said Nisar has played a trick to the premier who has never disclosed these assets in his declarations in the Election Commission and his tax returns.
He dismissed Nisar's accusations against him adding he has always declared his assets and been regularly paying taxed for the last 40 years.
