The sedition case against former military president Gen. Pervez Musharraf which has been moving at a slow pace since it was instituted in 2013, is likely to be put on fast track in the wake of the latest ruling by the Supreme annulling an earlier order by the special court set up to hold the trial that called for reinvestigation in the case.
The reinvestigation was ordered on a plea by Gen Musharraf implicating several other figures whom he claimed to have consulted. They included former chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, ex-PM Shaukat Aziz and then law minister Zahid Hamid while imposing emergency in 2007 and detaining after sacking over five dozen judges of superior courts.
The Supreme Court on Friday dealt a severe setback to the former president when it ruled that only the federal government has the prerogative to try him as sole responsible for imposition of emergency or any other person associated with it.
The court ruled only Gen Pervez Musharraf should be tried over treason charges for subverting the constitution in 2007.The apex court accepted for-mer chief justice Abdul Hameed Dogar's appeal to exclude him from the investigation into the high treason case filed against the military ruler in 2013 for imposing emergency in November 2007, as army chief.Setting aside a special court's orders to reinvestigate the case, the Supreme Court expressed its desire to start Musharraf's trial without any unnecessary delay.
