The priests in Warangal district, the hotbed of the Telangana movement, and other places have joined the stir to support the demand for separate state.
As the indefinite general strike by government employees and workers of Telangana region entered eleventh day on Friday throwing normal life out of gear, the priests also pitched in and boycotted the “Arjitha Sevas” (paid rituals) at several temples across the region. After performing the morning rituals, the priests stayed away from other duties to express solidarity with the agitators. “Our goal is to achieve separate Telangana state. Even Gods will understand and appreciate our sentiment,” the Telangana Archaka Samakhya Secretary Ratnakar Sharma said.
In Warangal district, over 700 temples were shut after the customary morning rituals. The famous, 650—year-old Bhadrakali temple in Warangal town, which normally attracts thousands of devotees every day from far and wide, wore a deserted look. Only ‘Nityahnikam’, the mandatory offering of prayers to the temple deities, took place at the temples while all the ‘Arjitha Sevas’ were cancelled.
