The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that Mitribah in Kuwait and Turbat in Pakistan recorded extreme hot temperatures of 54.0 °C, the highest recorded on the planet in the past 76 years.
Scientists from the WMO announced on Tuesday that extremes were recorded in Kuwait on 21 July, 2016, and in Pakistan on 28 May 2017. These unbelievably high temperatures are the Earth's 3rd and 4th hottest temperatures on record. "The two observations are the third (tied within uncertainty limits) and fourth-highest WMO-recognized temperature extremes," the WMO said in a statement on their website.
Further the statement notified that the Kuwait temperature reading has been now accepted as the highest temperature ever recorded for the continental region of Asia. "This investigation highlights the fact that we can now conduct extremely in-depth analyses of weather extremes," said Randall Cerveny, chief rapporteur of climate and weather extremes for the WMO.
While according to the WMO Weather and Climate Extremes archive, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California at 56.7°C on 10 July 1913. And, the highest temperature for the Eastern hemisphere was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, at 55.0°C.
