A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Tuesday between Oman’s National Records and Archive Authority (NRAA) and the Directorate-general of State Archives of Turkey.
The MoU was signed by Dr Hamad bin Mohammed Al Dhowyani, Chairman of NRAA, and Prof Yusuf Sarinay, Director-general of State Archives, Turkey, in the presence of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who left here on Wednesday, at the end of a three-day official visit.
Gul held a second session of talks with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said on Tuesday that focussed on bilateral ties and regional and international developments.
Also on Tuesday, Gul conferred with Sayyid Fahad bin Mahmoud Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers.
Underlining the importance of Gul’s ‘historic visit’ to the sultanate, Fahad said it would have a great impact on bilateral relations by opening up new horizons of cooperation. He also praised Turkey’s policies at the regional and international levels.
Gul also held discussions with the Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah and Transport and Communications Minister Dr Khamis bin Mubarak Al Alawi
Describing the MoU as a major breakthrough, Al Dhowyani said it would give Oman access to records and documents kept in Turkish archives and simultaneously encourage exchange of expertise in scientific and documentary forums.
“More importantly, it has paved the way for NRAA officials to get training in Turkish archives,” he added.
Al Dhowyani said the agreement was the result of year-long negotiations.
