On his way home from Kabul, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flew into Lahore for a surprise meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif and both leaders vowed to pursue the derailed bilateral peace process, officials said.
Modi and Sharif spent some 90 minutes at Sharif's ancestral residence in Raiwind town, about 40km from here, and decided to continue the suspended dialogue between the two countries after months of border tensions.

PM will travel to Lahore where he will meet PM Nawaz Sharif," the tweet said. At 3.30, Modi reached Lahore. His Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif received Modi at the airport. Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted: "A commitment to cooperation in South Asia. PM @narendramodi received by PM Sharif at Lahore" Modi greeted Sharif on his birthday at the airport. After the warm welcome, for the first time, both the leaders flew to Nawaz Sharif's home together in a chopper. Modi reached Sharif's house at 4.10. Another tweet from Vikas Swarup read: "Family matters. PM visits PM Sharif's home in a special gesture, where his grand-daughter's wedding is being held." At Sharif's house in Raiwind, after blessing the bride, Modi had a personal talk with the Pakistani Prime Minister. Later, Pakistani foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhary said both leaders expressed desire to carry forward dialogue process for larger good of the people of both nations. Modi left Nawaz's house at 5.20pm to the Lahore airport, accompanied by Nawaz Sharif. At 5.45pm, Modi boarded the flight for Delhi. The tweet from Vikas Swarup said: "Infusing a positive spirit in the neighborhood. PM @narendramodi departs from Pakistan after a few hours in Lahore." |
