A Nigerian man buried his dead father in a brand new BMW worth £66,000 (Dh3,24,032) instead of a coffin. The man identified only as Azubuike had promised his father that he would buy him a fancy car one day. Unfortunately, his father died passed away in the remote village of Ihiala, Nigeria, before the man could fulfil his promise.
But, Azubuike was adamant on fulfilling his promise and went to a car showroom and bought a BMW to bury his father, Daily Mail quoted local media reports.
A picture of the funeral shows the expensive car being lowered into a huge grave dug six feet deep by hand in the village. The dramatic picture has gone viral on social media showing pallbearers guiding the 'BMW coffin' down the grave.
But Azubuike's love for his father has termed as sheer waste of money by many on social media. Locals quipped that the BMW has satellite navigation to help him find his way to heaven.
"Buy the car for your parent while he is still alive if you are moneyed and bury them with a decent coffin but this is just being foolish and showing off," social media user Sifiso Inno Makhashila said. While another wrote: "This is the sort of thing that keeps us poor as black people."
In 2015, an Enugu billionaire buried his mother in a brand new Hummer and in the same year a man was buried in his favourite car in China.
