Roads in the tiny state of Kerala are the most unsafe in India if the rising cases of rash driving and road rage are any indication.
According to National Crime Records Bureau, the southern Indian state accounted for more than 25 per cent of the total 409, 000 rash driving and road rage cases registered in the country as a whole during 2014. The total number of cases registered in police stations across the state during the year was 109, 000.
A much bigger state of Tamil Nadu, which follows Kerala in the list, had registered only 52,884 cases. This is less than half the number of cases reported in Kerala, which accounts for only 2.76% of the country's population.
The third state in the list is Madhya Pradesh, which recorded 39, 259 cases. This is followed by Karnataka with 31, 907 cases and Gujarat with 29,667 cases. The number of such cases was negligible in bigger states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.
Curiously, Cochin and Trivandrum are the most unsafe cities in the country in terms of "rash driving/road rage" cases. The data compiled on the basis of cases registered by state police showed that out of 96,648 cases registered in 53 major cities in the country, 22,247 were reported from Kerala's commercial and political capitals.
Cochin and Trivandrum also topped the 53 cities in the number of cases per 100, 000 population. While Cochin recorded 634 cases per 100,000 population, Trivandrum trailed close behind with 522 cases. The national average was little over 60.
