A police officer in the Latvian capital of Riga is facing an investigation and possible disciplinary actions after making light of the crash of FZ981.
In a Facebook post - which has since been deleted - officer Janis Brusevics said "there's nothing to worry about, the majority of them were Russian citizens."
Following the post, the head of Riga Municipal Police Chief Juris Lucas said that the case would be investigated and noted that the police force is re-considering his continued employment.
"In connection with this tragic incident, one of the employees of the Riga municipal police posted an unacceptable comment," reads the police statement, which was posted on the Facebook page of mayor Neil Ushakov. "Having realized the incongruity of his actions, the employee in question has removed the comments and apologized for the statement, expressing condolences to the relatives of the people who died."
"With regard to the comment that discredits the Riga Municipal Police, we launched a service check to assess the actions of the employee and to decide whether we should continue working with him," the statement adds. "I want to express my regret over this incident and apologize for the actions of the officer, which contrary to the policies of the Riga Municipal Police service."
According to Russia Today, the officer posted briefly posted a message noting that he "didn't want to appear disrespectful" before deleting his Facebook profile entirely.
"There is no excuse for my behaviour, and having realized the joke was inappropriate, I deleted the comment," he wrote.
